On the 21st of October 2015 I will graduate from UCC. This has been a sentence I’ve been excited about and dreading all week. The thought of another era ending in our lives is daunting; we’re leaving behind so many memories we’ve made here, friendships that may will fade away  and the innocence and naivety we had before entering these hallowed halls.

On the other hand we’ve gained so much from our time here, it will give us memories that will live us for the rest of our lives, friendships that will last the test of time and educational experience we could never had imagined. We may have come to UCC from different paths: mature student, the leaving cert, PLC or through an alternative method. None of this matters, all that matters is that we are here now.

michael-j-foxLadies and Gentlemen of the class of 2015, unlike Baz Luhrmann I have no single message to impart my new found wisdom (although I do advise the use of sunscreen). All I know is that today is the day Marty McFly will go back to the future, think of the differences the world has made in those 30 years but, think how much more we still have to achieve. We may not have flying cars or self lacing runners, but we do have is more meaningful than that, a more accepting society, huge advances in technology and a significantly more educated population.

So much progression has happened in 30 short years and the thing is we have the power now to change the next 30. This is echoed in comedienne Mindy Kaling’s speech, where she addressed the graduating class Harvard Law, she said the following: “I’m supposed to give you advice and I thought, ‘what advice could I give you guys?’ … So then I was thinking, ‘well then, who should be giving advice?’ The answer is people like you. You’re better educated and you’re going to go out there in the world and people are going to listen to what you say… I look at all of you and see America’s future… Understand that one day you will have the power to make a difference, so use it well.”

If there’s anything you take from this rambling, please remember this “We do not need magic to change the world, we carry all the power we need inside ourselves already: we have the power to imagine better.” – JK Rowling
