The week of the 9th-13th of November marks Mental Health Week on campus, and Societies have come out in force to show their support. But where to begin? Never fear, Kelly Doherty is on hand to guide you through the events of Mental Health Week 2015.
As usual, UCC Societies are super busy this week with events from a wide range of interests – from the niche to the universal. With this week being UCC Mental Health Awareness Week, many societies have opted to run events in conjunction with the overall campaign. UCC Psychological Society and SAMH have a full week of events within the theme of Mental Health Awareness, including talks, lemonade stands and lots of fun ways of raising awareness, whilst many others have one off events. On Monday at 7pm in Boole 6, UCC Labour have a Mental Health Awareness talk and a screening of The Simpsons. UCC Friends of MSF, UCC Amnesty International Society, SAMH, Psych Soc, UCC International Development Society are are coming together on Monday in Boole I at 7pm for what should be an interesting talk on ‘Refugees & Mental Health’ with the Vice President, Dr John Tobin, of the College of Psychiatrists of Ireland, speaking. UCC Psych Soc have a 90s Quiz on Thursday in the Old Bar at 7pm with money going to AWARE. UCC Macra Na Feirme are hosting a balloon launch and a screening of Up in West Wing 6 on Monday at 7pm for any of the Pixar fans amongst us.
The UCC Societies Executive are hosting a social media competition to name the new Hub teddy bear with an unreal prize and will be distributing flyers on keeping on top of societies work as well as everything else a student has to deal with, and we’ll be having special training on time and stress management as part of UCC Mental Health Awareness Week!
Elsewhere, there are society weeks with UCC Science Society’s Science Week, UCC LGBT Society’s Ally Week, UCC Africa Society’s Africa Week, UCC Geology Society’s Geology Week, UCC Surgical Society’s Blood & Organ Donation Awareness Week. Each week has a whole host of interesting events; with highlights including Science Soc’s screening of The Imitation Game on Wednesday at 7pm in Brookfield G06, LGBT’s Life Sized Cluedo at 7pm on Wednesday in Civil Eng G10, Geology Soc’s ‘Between A Rock And Hard Place’ talk with Dr Iain Steward at 6.30pm on Wednesday in Boole 4 and African Arts & Crafts in the Common room from 1pm in Wednesday with Africa Soc.
There’s too many highlights from the week for me to mention them all but some other unreal events this week including UCC Feminist Society’s Feminist Critique of Taylor Swift as part of their Icons Series in Boole 6 at 7pm on Tuesday (which features a very charismatic, very cool, very attractive guest speaker who is definitely not me). UCC Journalism Society have a wonderful fashion writers workshop on Wednesday in the Glucksman at 7pm with a special focus on mental health, featuring Irish fashion designer Emma Manley, of Manley fashion line, model, stylist and fashion writer James McDonald, and GAA star and Irish Independent Fashion Columnist Paul Galvin, all in collaboration with SAMH. In the week’s second Simpsons themed event, Government & Politics Society will be putting your knowledge to the test in their Simpsons table quiz at 7.30pm in the New Bar on Tuesday. For all those who like their food good and plentiful, UCC Foodies are hosting their ticketed Annual Cultural Food Crawl and are meeting in the Amphitheatre at 6pm on Wednesday. Islamic Soc are hosting an Arabic Class in Brookfield 1.01 at 6.30pm on Wednesday as well. Also, don’t miss out on the hilarious Foil, Arms and Hog, hosted by UCC Cancer Society in Boole 3 at 8pm on Wednesday.
For those who can’t make evening events, there’s plenty happening on campus during the daytime. UCC Health Society have a lemonade stand on Monday from 12pm on main campus, Geology Soc are running ‘Paint Your Pet Rock for Mental Health Week’ at 12pm outside the Boole Library. For all aspiring models and any one who fancies themselves a bit, on Monday from 12 – 2pm, UCC Fashion Society have their castings for UCC’s Next Top Model in West Wings 6 & 8. Surgical Soc will have information stands on blood and organ donation on the Honan Plaza and in Brookfield every day. On Thursday, at 1pm in the Amphitheatre, Africa Soc are hosting ‘Chants, Jazz & Drums’, which promises to be a fun, lively event and, for anyone who needs a good old cuddle, SUAS have their ‘Hugs for Happiness’ event outside the Boole Library from 12pm on Thursday. For all you cool musicians, SAMH and UCC Music Soc are having a ‘Coffee & Jam’ session in the Glucksman from 4-6pm on Tuesday.
Until next week, folks, remember to keep the Hub clean, to not hit the print button more than three times in a row when your poster doesn’t print first time round and to try to attend at least one event from a society you’ve never been involved with before. To find out more on these events and everything else happening this week in UCC Societies, check the UCC Societies Facebook page and Twitter. If you have any questions on how to get involved, don’t hesitate to contact me on firstname.lastname@example.org.
